Can You Play Xbox 360 Games on Xbox One? Full Compatibility Guide

Xbox's backward compatibility program covers hundreds of Xbox 360 titles, but not the whole library

Yes, but with an important catch: it’s a curated list, not the entire library. Microsoft’s backward compatibility program brought hundreds of Xbox 360 titles to Xbox One and later Xbox Series X|S, but plenty of games, including some big names, were never added.

How Xbox Backward Compatibility Actually Works

Unlike the Wii’s built-in GameCube hardware, Xbox One and Series X|S run Xbox 360 games through emulation, meaning Microsoft has to individually test and patch each title rather than the whole library working automatically. Compatibility rolled out gradually: an initial beta arrived for Xbox Preview Program members in June 2015, went public that November with around 104 games, and the library grew steadily afterward, eventually extending to select original Xbox titles from 2001 as well starting in 2017.

Checking If a Specific Game Is Compatible

The most reliable way to check is directly in the Xbox app or console dashboard search, since Microsoft has continued adding titles over time and any static list can go out of date. If you own the game digitally, a compatible title simply appears in “My Games and Apps” ready to download. If you own the disc, inserting it into an Xbox One or Series X|S triggers an automatic compatibility patch download the first time you play.

What You Actually Gain Beyond Just Playing the Game

Feature Available on Xbox Series X|S
FPS Boost (improved frame rate) Select titles only
Auto HDR Select titles only
Higher resolution output Select titles only
Save/achievement carryover Yes, for all compatible titles
Cross-buy with original purchase Yes, no repurchase needed

FPS Boost in particular is worth knowing about: it’s a separate enhancement Microsoft applies on top of basic backward compatibility, nearly doubling frame rates on specific supported titles rather than being a universal upgrade across every compatible game.

Notable Games That Made the List

The compatible library spans genuine blockbusters alongside smaller titles: the entire Gears of War and Mass Effect trilogies, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Dark Souls, the Assassin’s Creed series, and The Orange Box (Portal and Half-Life 2) are all playable. Digital-only Xbox 360 titles like Braid and Shadow Complex also made the cut, which matters since those never had a disc release to fall back on.

Why Some Games Never Got Added

Microsoft ended active additions to the backward compatibility program around 2019, meaning any Xbox 360 title not already added is very unlikely to be included going forward. Licensing complications (particularly for games with heavy licensed music or third-party content) and the sheer testing effort required for less popular titles are the most commonly cited reasons certain games were left out permanently.

For similar model-specific compatibility questions on other consoles, our GameCube on Wii guide and PS2 on PS3 guide cover the same territory for Nintendo and Sony hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy Xbox 360 games again to play them on Xbox One?

No, if you already own a compatible game either digitally or on disc, it’s playable at no extra cost through the backward compatibility program.

Does backward compatibility work on Xbox Series S as well as Series X?

Yes, both current-generation consoles support the same backward compatibility library, since the feature is tied to Microsoft’s software rather than being exclusive to one specific console model.

Will Microsoft add more Xbox 360 games to the list in future?

Active additions to the program effectively stopped around 2019, so while not formally impossible, no new titles have been added in recent years and none should be expected going forward.

Final Thoughts

Xbox 360 backward compatibility on Xbox One and Series X|S covers a genuinely large and well-known slice of that generation’s library, but it’s a fixed, curated list rather than universal support. Check the dashboard search directly for any specific title rather than relying on memory of what’s included.
